GoldenEye (1995) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

Goldeneye Quote: “You know, this sort of behavior could qualify as sexual harassment.” – Miss Moneypenny

“Goldeneye” gave us a new James Bond in Pierce Brosnan and a type of villain with Alan Cumming’s Boris The Hacker. But the 1995 blockbuster missed a Golden opportunity to reinvent a franchise that was long overdue for some growing up.

Sure, there were highlights: a sadistically sexy Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp, another Sean Bean death and a cameo by Minnie Driver. However, the improbable stunts, goofy gadgets, sexism, misogyny were too much for this movie to overcome.

At least there was the video game. Man, that was a fun game.

“Goldeneye” When a powerful satellite system falls into the hands of Alec Trevelyan, AKA Agent 006 (Sean Bean), a former ally-turned-enemy, only James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) can save the world from an awesome space weapon that — in one short pulse — could destroy the earth! As Bond squares off against his former compatriot, he also battles Trevelyan’s stunning ally, Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), an assassin who uses pleasure as her ultimate weapon.

The Usual Suspects (1995) – Best Movies of the ’80s & ’90s Review

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist,” says con man Kint (Kevin Spacey), drawing a comparison to the most enigmatic criminal of all time, Keyser Soze. Kint attempts to convince the feds that the mythic crime lord not only exists but is also responsible for drawing Kint and his four partners into a multi-million dollar heist that ended with an explosion in San Pedro Harbor – leaving few survivors.

The winner of the first Shat The Movies Fantasy Premier League season, listener Nick Cobs, chose as his prize one of the biggest “holy crap!” plot twists of the ’90s: “The Usual Suspects.”

We all remember the iconic line-up scene and utterly addictive performances by Benicio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, and Stephen Baldwin (no, not you Gabriel Byrne). But will the Shat Crew hail Bryan Singer’s breakthrough neo-noir flick as a smart, stylish ensemble mystery or dismiss it as the Fedora Guy of movies?

Join us as we take another look at the crappy wig, silly heist, gratuitous vengeance, horrible police sketch, and questionable narrators that make “The Usual Suspects” worthy of the Shat treatment.

The Usual Suspects Quote: “One Cannot Be Betrayed If One Has No People.” – Kobayashi

Valley Girl (1983) – Best Movies of the ’80s & ’90s Review

“Valley Girl” Lovely teen Julie Richman (Deborah Foreman) is steeped in the excessive, pink-clad culture of the San Fernando Valley, complete with her narcissistic boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen). At a party, however, Julie falls for an edgy Hollywood punk named Randy (Nicolas Cage), and the two begin an unlikely romance. Torn between fitting in with her superficial friends and embracing a more non-conformist lifestyle, Julie ultimately has to decide to stay with Tommy or take a risk with Randy.

Shat The Movies is no stranger to Nicolas Cage movies and teen movies; it was only a matter of time before the two collided in the ’80s classic “”Valley Girl,”” a film that stoked our loins and crushed our hopes.

It’s something like “Romeo and Juliet” – in that both scripts have characters and things happen—but calling Randy and Julie star-crossed lovers is a stretch. “Valley Girl” feels more like a mix of “Grease” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (another Nic Cage flick), with some painful lingo to spice things up.

Gene was utterly confounded, asking: Do girls really check out boys en masse? Why didn’t hippies turn into cool ’80s parents? Why do all the characters look the same age? And is Randy a stalker?

Ash set the record straight by letting us know girls don’t dance around in their underwear at sleepovers, radio dedications are romantic, New Orleans parents are super chill, and Nic Cage is a good kisser.

And Big D was the biggest fan of all: excited by the seedy side of Hollywood, cheering for the live music acts and longing to live in a body small enough for car sex.

Valley Girl Quote: “Hey, What is this, Bangkok?! I don’t need a massage.” – Steve Richman

Twister (1996) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

Twister Quote: “The Suck Zone. It’s the point basically when the twister… sucks you up. That’s not the technical term for it, obviously.” – Dustin Davis

“Twister” gave us all a horrifying glimpse into a world where the United States doesn’t have any politically correct superpower enemies. Left with no face for our fears, director Jan De Bont made weather itself the enemy, and not even a star-studded cast including Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Cary Elwes could save the resulting shatstorm.

If you were thrilled by this movie years ago or have warm feelings for the late Bill Paxton, let us teach you to hate everything about this movie … with good cause.

“Twister” During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing — and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own — Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.

Seven (1995) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

Seven Quote: “Anyone who spends a significant amount of time with me finds me disagreeable…” – William Somerset

Anybody can make a slasher flick. And talented directors can pull off thrillers. But “Seven” is a masterpiece only David Fincher could pull off. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow round out a powerhouse cast that elevates the grotesque to art. This movie is dark, edgy, poetic, symbolic, and twisted. How the hell was Gene disappointed?

“Seven” When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city.

Road House (1989) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

“Road House” invented the good bad movie. But was it actually any good? Patrick Swayze was charming but grossly undersized. The script was quotable but largely nonsense. And did you know Road House is two words?

Whether you relished Sam Elliot’s smooth bass and glorious mane or cringed at the ridiculousness of tearing out throats, one thing is for sure: the villains, butts, and bar fights were pure ’80s.

“Road House”The Double Deuce is the meanest, loudest and rowdiest bar south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and Dalton (Patrick Swayze) has been hired to clean it up. He might not look like much, but the Ph.D.-educated bouncer proves he’s more than capable — busting the heads of troublemakers and turning the roadhouse into a jumping hot-spot. But Dalton’s romance with the gorgeous Dr. Clay (Kelly Lynch) puts him on the bad side of cutthroat local big shot Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara).

The Boondock Saints (1999) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

“The Boondock Saints” Tired of the crime overrunning the streets of Boston, Irish Catholic twin brothers Conner (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) are inspired by their faith to cleanse their hometown of evil with their own brand of zealous vigilante justice. As they hunt down and kill one notorious gangster after another, they become controversial folk heroes in the community. But Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe), an eccentric FBI agent, is fast closing in on their blood-soaked trail.

“”The Boondock Saints” went from the hottest script in Hollywood to a pathetic five-theater release, to one of the biggest cult classics of the late ’90s. But does Troy Duffy’s underground hit film live up to all the hype, or was it just a weird byproduct of an edgy era?

Listener Jim L. from London wired some money across the pond to commission this shoot-em-up episode of Shat The Movies, exposing Big D to his first taste of The Saints in action.

Did you know Duffy originally wanted Mark Wahlberg, Kenneth Branagh, and even Robert De Niro in this movie? Gene did. Did you know there’s some lovely side dick? Rog did. Did you know “The Boondock Saints” paved the way for “John Wick” to be made? It’s not a fact, but Gene’s pretty sure of it.

Also explore whether “The Boondock Saints” is loosely based on Kevin Smith’s “Dogma,” what constitutes telegraphing homosexuality, and Duffy’s surprisingly artistic use of slow motion.”

The Boondock Saints Quote: “Do you know what we need, man? Some rope.” – Connor MacManus

The Santa Clause (1994) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

“The Santa Clause” Divorced dad Scott (Tim Allen) has custody of his son (Eric Lloyd) on Christmas Eve. After he accidentally kills a man in a Santa suit, they are magically transported to the North Pole, where an elf explains that Scott must take Santa’s place before the next Christmas arrives. Scott thinks he’s dreaming, but over the next several months he gains weight and grows an inexplicably white beard. Maybe that night at the North Pole wasn’t a dream after all — and maybe Scott has a lot of work to do.

“”Shat The Movies” voters have spoken, and the holiday movie they most wanted to hear in 2019 is “The Santa Clause.” Take a magic sleigh ride back to 1994, when Tim Allen was the king of TV and you could still fat shame in the workplace.

Listen as the Shat boys discover the true meaning of Christmas, Big D laments the demise to Black Friday, Gene recalls phreaking phone sex lines as a 12-year-old, and Roger yearns for the era of bungling police in feel-good comedies.

Other topics include the magic of Denny’s, St. Nick’s occupational hazards, elven uprisings, how Tim Allen changed our hearts, how Bill Murray passed on the role, and how Bernard the Elf grew up to direct porn. Sorta.

The Santa Clause Quote: “If something should happen to me, put on my suit; the reindeer will know what to do.” – Scott Calvin

Edward Scissorhands (1990) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

“Edward Scissorhands” A scientist (Vincent Price) builds an animated human being — the gentle Edward (Johnny Depp). The scientist dies before he can finish assembling Edward, though, leaving the young man with a freakish appearance accentuated by the scissor blades he has instead of hands. Loving suburban saleswoman Peg (Dianne Wiest) discovers Edward and takes him home, where he falls for Peg’s teen daughter (Winona Ryder). However, despite his kindness and artistic talent, Edward’s hands make him an outcast.

Edward Scissorhands Quote: “It’s not heaven he’s from! It’s straight from the stinking flames of hell! The power of Satan is in him, I can feel it. Can’t you? Have you poor sheep strayed so far from the path?” – Esmeralda

Many people forget “Edward Scissorhands” is a Christmas movie. Well, at least it’s a movie with Christmas in it. Or is it simply snow? Actually, it’s just shave ice. But whatever, it’s Christmastime in Shatland, and we’re doing the damn thing.

Tim Burton’s career has been long and flirted with Christmas several times, but few of his movies came close to achieving the magic he bottled up with “Edward Scissorhands.”

It made us laugh with the waterbed scene, cry with the sculpture scene, and marvel at a cast that included Winona Ryder with a heart of gold, Alan Arkin as a loving dad, Dianne Wiest as an angel on earth, Vincent Price in his final role, Anthony Michael Hall as a bully, and of course Johnny Depp.

Gene Lyons and Kerri Gross naturally gushed over this movie, but “Edward Scissorhands” lost a few point with Big D, who loved it as a kid. Where some saw an inventive near-silent performance from Depp, Big D saw an easy acting job. Where some saw Tim Burton at the top of his game, Big D saw the adolescent angst of a suburban guy pandering to counter-culture.

Also on this edition of “Shat The Movies”:

Was the finale a perfectly dark fairy tale ending or a silly wrap-up with no lessons learned?
What’s more important: etiquette or hand-marking
and Big D’s Parable of The Mountain Lion.

Braveheart (1995) – Best Movies of the '80s & '90s Review

Premature kilts, revised history, foppish Brits, Crossfit Scots, a 40-year-old Mel Gibson, a hot 9-year-old princess, undying love, and a romance nobody wanted to see. “Braveheart” brought a new degree of violence and complexity to the historical action genre and made 3 hours fly by.

Don’t miss Roger Roeper’s triumphant and sexually-charged return to Shat The Movies, Big D’s baffling discussion of black eyes, and Gene’s uncomfortably intimate recollections of his high school science teacher.

Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, horse video: https://youtu.be/8-ucbJRkm-Y?t=1m4s

“Braveheart” Tells the story of the legendary thirteenth-century Scottish hero named William Wallace (Mel Gibson). Wallace rallies the Scottish against the English monarch and Edward I (Peter Hanly) after he suffers a personal tragedy by English soldiers. Wallace gathers a group of amateur warriors that is stronger than any English army.
