Filmmaker Doug Block is a man of many hats. First and foremost, he is a documentary filmmaker. He produces and directs, shoots and writes. He not only makes his own films, he also helps produce the films of others. While Doug is best known for making personal docs, he does make other kinds of films too.

Doug does consulting, as well as personal coaching. He shoots photos for fun and weddings for profit. And he founded and co-hosts The D-Word, a thriving online community for documentary professionals.

He is currently in production on a new film, “Betty & Henri,” where Doug sets out to solve the mystery behind an anonymous, 20-year old love letter he discovered by chance in a used travel book. With only first names to go on it’s been a near impossible quest, but that’s the fun of it.

Before today’s fast-paced era of digital and remote filmmaking, in-person mentorship played a key role in film crews, post houses, and a filmmaker’s career development. Cutting rooms and film sets were also creative hives for passing on techniques, ideas, war stories and developing relationships that would help grow a career. Trainee would move to apprentice, apprentice to assistant, and eventually through hard work and guidance, the learner would eventually become the master.

Seasoned career veterans delighted in sharing the knowledge, techniques, tricks, and ideas, they had learned over the years. With the increased speed of digital cinema and rapid pace of today’s industry, young film professionals are often thrust into situations without having the opportunity to meet a mentor, or the time spend as a protege.

Filmmaker U was created to help fill this void in the modern day film industry. We bring the best in the business to any aspiring media artist looking for a meaningful and truly enriching apprentice experience.
